KieranTimberlake is currently looking for an urban ecology researcher to join our team. Our design practice includes more than 85 professionals from diverse backgrounds and is recognized around the world as a leader in sustainable design. We are signatories of the AIA 2030 commitment and the declaration of American architects.


The urban ecology researcher will be a member of the KieranTimberlake research group and will work alongside peer mentor environmental researchers to advance the company’s pursuit of resilient design solutions for buildings and cities. They will be responsible for applying their understanding of natural systems and ecological design principles to support architectural and research project teams, and their regular activities will include the following:

  • Integrate climate adaptation strategies and resilient design principles into architectural and urban planning projects
  • Interpretation of regional and local ecological data and regulations for project sites
  • Carrying out assessments of ecosystem services and ecological impacts
  • Participate in technical review sessions with peer mentors in environmental research
  • Synthesize ecological goals for clients and stakeholders across themes of conservation, public health and ecosystem health
  • Prepare research proposals for applied and empirical experiments
  • Review of technical literature in environmental planning and urban ecology
  • Preparation of research results for publication and peer review
  • Extend research results to make actionable design proposals
  • Learn new tools, methods and techniques in environmental analysis
  • Collaborate in the development of new tools and workflows
  • Support KieranTimberlake’s sustainable development action plan
  • Participate in interdisciplinary brainstorming sessions and discussions with members of the peer-reviewed research group on a wide range of topics including building performance, environmental justice, human health, post-occupancy assessment and many others


The ideal candidate is a thoughtful and curious person who wishes to be part of a collaborative and interdisciplinary team and can demonstrate:

  • Strong written, verbal and graphic communication skills
  • Strong quantitative reasoning skills
  • Desire to learn new methods and skills
  • Certification or desire to receive certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC), International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), International Living Future Institute (ILFI), or similar
  • Proficiency in modeling software such as: Arch GIS, ENVI-met, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), 3D CAD and visual script
  • Basic understanding of calculus and programming principles, including a basic knowledge of at least one of the following languages: C #, Javascript, Python, R

Applicants should also list their relevant work experience or courses in one of the following areas:

  • Principles of resilient design or urban ecology
  • Energy and environment
  • Principles of environmental planning and management
  • Environmental and health equity
  • Environmental policy
  • Experimental design in the field or in the laboratory
  • Modeling of ecosystem services
  • Modeling of dynamic systems
  • Life cycle analysis / assessment
  • Statistics and data analysis
  • Geospatial modeling (GIS)
