KieranTimberlake is currently seeking an Urban Ecology Researcher to join our team. Our design firm includes more than 85 professionals with varied backgrounds and is recognized worldwide as a leader in sustainable design. Emphasizing both research and design of the built environment, our projects include programming, planning and design of master plans and new buildings; conservation, renovation and transformation of existing buildings; the development of application-specific environmental analysis and forecasting tools; building and environmental monitoring; and new building and envelope assemblies. We are signatories to the AIA 2030 Commitment and the American Architects Declaration.

Responsibilities

The urban ecology researcher will be a member of Kieran Timberlake Research Group and will work alongside peer environmental researchers to advance the search for resilient design solutions for buildings and cities. They will be responsible for applying their understanding of natural systems and ecological design principles to support architectural and research project teams, and their regular activities will include the following:

  • Integrate climate adaptation strategies and resilient design principles into architecture and urban planning projects
  • Interpretation of regional and local ecological data and regulations for project sites
  • Conducting ecosystem services and ecological impact assessments
  • Participate in technical review sessions with environmental research peer-mentors
  • Synthesize ecological objectives for clients and stakeholders on the topics of conservation, public health and ecosystem health
  • Prepare research proposals for applied and empirical experiments
  • Review of technical literature in environmental planning and urban ecology
  • Prepare research results for publication and peer review
  • Extend research results to make actionable design proposals
  • Learn new tools, methods and techniques in environmental analysis
  • Collaborate in the development of new tools and workflows
  • Supporting KieranTimberlake’s Sustainability Action Plan
  • Participate in interdisciplinary brainstorming sessions and discussions with members of the research group on a wide range of topics, including building performance, environmental justice, human health, post-occupancy evaluation and more ‘others

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is a thoughtful and curious person who wants to be part of a collaborative and interdisciplinary team and can demonstrate:

  • Strong written, verbal and graphic communication skills
  • Strong quantitative reasoning skills
  • Demonstrated success in collaborative teams
  • Desire to learn new methods and skills
  • Certification or desire to receive certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC), International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), International Living Future Institute (ILFI), or similar
  • Mastery of modeling software such as: Arch GIS, ENVI-met, life cycle analysis (LCA), 3D CAD and visual scripting
  • Basic understanding of computational and programming principles, including basic knowledge of at least one of the following languages: C#, Javascript, Python, R
